(September 03, 2009) A group of light-mantled sooty albatrosses have set a new breeding record.
They have created a colony on King George Island, one of the South Shetland Islands located in Antarctica.
This new colony is the southernmost breeding location of any albatross species ever recorded.
Two confirmed nests have been seen by researchers on the island, one containing eggs and the other chicks, and three more possible nests have been located.
The light-mantled sooty albatross (Latin name: Phoebetria palpebrata) is a medium-sized bird that has a circumpolar distribution around the Southern Ocean.
