|When the day arrives for you to bring your new hamster home, you will need to ensure that you have the appropriate equipment to bring him home in.|
A small animal box or carrier is the most suitable thing to use, and you should place a layer of shavings in the bottom of the box. Also put in a handful of hamster food and some vegetables for your new hamster to nibble on. A water bottle attached to the side of the carrier may leak due to the motion of the car, so it isn't really appropriate to use one, but your hamster will get any moisture he needs from the vegetables so he will be fine for the duration of the journey.
If you are only taking your hamster on a short journey, a cardboard box with air holes in the top can be used, but it isn't ideal. Hamsters can chew through cardboard easily so a plastic tub, such as an ice cream tub, with air holes in the top is more appropriate.
When you arrive home with your new hamster you should place him in his pre prepared cage. Leave him for a day or two to get used to his new surroundings and relax as he will have found the journey quite stressful. After a couple of days he should be comfortable in his new home then you can bring your hamster out and get to know him a bit better.
