Main Characteristics
Side-Striped Jackals have a body length between 65 and 81 cms (26 - 32 inches), a tail length between 30 and 41 cms (12 - 16 inches) and they weigh between 6.5 and 14 kgs (14 - 31 lbs).
They are grey/yellow in colour with a pale coloured underside and light and dark stripes on their flanks.
Habitat
Side-Striped Jackals are found in open country in central, eastern and southern Africa.
Diet
Side-Striped Jackals feed on rodents, birds, lizards, insects, eggs, carrion and refuse.
Breeding
After a gestation period of 63 days, Side-Striped Jackals give birth to a litter of 3 - 6 young. They are weaned at 10 weeks old and they reach sexual maturity at 6 - 8 months old.
