Main Characteristics

Egyptian Mongoose are the largest of all the mongoose species found in Africa. They have a body length between 48 and 60 cms (19 - 23.6 inches), a tail length between 33 and 54 cms (13 - 21.3 inches) and they weigh between 1.7 and 4 kgs (3.7 - 8.8 lbs).

They have a long, slender body, a pointed snout and small ears. Their coarse fur ranges from grey to reddish brown in colour and it is ticked with brown or yellow flecks. They have a black tip on the end of their tail and their hind feet lack any fur.


Egyptian Mongoose prefer to live in the savanna, scrub or forests of Europe and Africa. They are usually found close to a water source.


Egyptian Mongoose feed on rodents, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians, insects, eggs and fruit.


After a gestation period of 11 weeks, Egyptian Mongoose give birth to a litter of 2 - 4 young. They reach sexual maturity at around 2 years of age.
