Main Characteristics
Stoats are one of the most widespread mustelids. They have a body length between 17 and 24 cms (6.5 - 9.5 inches), a tail length between 9 and 12 cms (3.5 - 4.75 inches) and they weigh between 60 and 200 g (2.1 - 7 oz).
They are russet brown in colour with a white underside and their tail has a black tip. During the winter months they turn completely white, apart from the tip of their tail, and it is during this time when they are usually known as Ermine.
Habitat
Stoats are found in a variety of habitats in North America, Europe and Asia.
Diet
Stoats mainly feed on rodents, rabbits and birds.
Breeding
Stoats breed during April and May and after a 280 day period of delayed implantation and a gestation period of 21 - 28 days, a litter of 5 - 12 kits are born.
The youngsters are weaned at 5 weeks and are independent at 12 weeks old. Females are sexually mature by the time they become independent.
